EDF Renewable Services enlists Romax for vibration detection and analytics services

North America’s largest provider of third party operations and maintenance, EDF Renewable Services generate over 9,300MW of electricity through servicing over 7,400 turbines, 40+equipment types, and 720+ inverters.

EDF RS recently partnered with Romax as they wanted to identify damage in wind turbines more effectively to support end of warranty campaigns and enable improved planning for inspections and maintenance. After a combination of Romax’ portable vibration equipment and expert personnel, two projects quickly identified planet bearing damage subsequently confirmed by inspection.

The improved fault detection which Romax offered, as well as its identification of a range of fault and damage types, has enabled a more targeted and cost-effective inspection and maintenance process, with more effectively supported warranty claims, and more focused remedial action to help extend the wind turbine lifecycle.

Mike Cookson of EDF Renewable Services says, “With the planet bearing damage that we identified in our joint campaign, we supported a warranty claim of US$600,000 – a return on investment in the region of 20:1. The ability to know which turbines to target means we have a much better process in place for managing inspections and maintenance.”
