NREL maximises wind energy efficiency and reliability using Romax software and services
The U.S. Department of Energy’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency R&D (NREL) conduct essential R&D activities across multiple areas.
Their wind energy research and development division, the National Wind Technology Centre, has used Romax’ RomaxWIND software and accompanying consultancy services in a range of projects. Their research aims to deliver innovative drivetrain designs, further understand gearbox failures, and ultimately minimise the cost of wind energy.
One of their recent research programmes, the Gearbox Reliability Collaborative, brought together manufacturers, owners, researchers and engineering experts to pinpoint ways to reduce gearbox failures and therefore minimise associated cost. Romax formed part of this group, using RomaxWIND to perform integrated design, analysis and optimisation of the drivetrain, investigating efficient and cost-effective improvements.
