Romax’s mindful management of mental health

Mental health issues are on the rise. With over 16 million people experiencing challenges in this area of their health. In the UK, 2.3 million of those are out of work (or homeless) because of mental health issues such as depression or anxiety and an alarming 1 in 4 people are likely to experience a mental health issue over the course of a year.

Working conditions and environment can have a huge impact on mental health and equally someone’s mental health can have a significant impact in performing their job well. The two go hand in hand. It is therefore an increasing concern of employees and indeed an obligation to support people in recognising these challenging times and through them.

Research recently showed in Scientific news that mental health problems were one of the most-costly forms of sickness to US businesses in 2018. We realise that running an effective business is a symbiotic relationship between happy and fulfilled employees and good business practice. Being a mindful employer is something we take very seriously. As a result, we have teamed up with national Mental Health Charity MIND to see how we could put in place practices to support our employees to put in place health, safety and mental well-being approaches.

As a global employer, Romax invests in its employees in a multitude of ways tailored differently to its regional presence – from a focus on nutrition and health such as providing free fruit, flexible hours, to BUPA healthcare, access to local gyms at reduced rates to working on creating a ‘feel good factor’ through social engagements such as participation in corporate social responsibility activities. All things that boost a person’s well-being, and by doing so it is hoped that these benefits produce happier, more engaged employees as a result, with more productivity and less absence a side benefit.

We realise that the financial climate can be a major source of stress to anyone and everyone, thus we offer assistance with financial well-being to all of our employees via Pensions planning, with advisors visiting twice a year; as well as running a holiday purchase scheme to give unparalleled flexibility and breaks to those who need it.

We have several people around the business who are trained mental health first aiders, along with managers who are all trained in recognising mental health signs in others and be equipped to hold a conversational support. This is another way we encourage our managers and all staff to approach each other with respect and kindness.

In addition, all employees have access to numbers to call for support and phone Apps where Cognitive Behavioural Therapy goals can be created, and access to Meditation can be practised. We encourage our employees to recognise the benefits of relaxation by hosting a ‘massage’ day where employees can have reduced massages by masseurs to reduce stress or tension and to encourage good desk-based working habits!
