Design better electric and conventional vehicle powertrain concepts in a fraction of the time

Date: , 09:00 & 16:00 BST

Presented by: Kristian Kouumdjieff , Product Manager

Traditionally, initial planning of the powertrain system in terms of transmission ratios, layout and packaging, drive cycle efficiency, transmission topology, gear and bearing sizing and selection is done through various combinations of CAD, hand calculations, custom tools, rules of thumb and experience.

Using legacy methods and over-reliance on previous designs can prevent engineers from exploring novel designs and stifle innovation. In addition, disparate ways of storing concept design data can lead to errors and an inefficient process. In the cases of complex systems such as planetary transmissions, CAD is problematic for understanding the complicated kinematics.

In this webinar we will demonstrate how Romax Concept can help engineers translate their ideas into functional models extremely quickly, capturing both the physical embodiment of the design, fully integrated with CAD, and the performance aspects, from component sizing and rating to overall powertrain metrics, such as overall transmission ratios, drive cycle efficiency, top speed, and more.

Demonstrations will include a complex planetary transmission, made easy-to-model by drag-and-drop and easy-to-understand by Concept’s visualisation tools. An electric vehicle powertrain will also be featured showcasing a concept-level electric machine representation, with the ability to import native Motor-CAD files, allowing the investigation of gear and electric machine excitation orders for very early design for NVH, weight and cost, and motor bearing selection.

We will also demonstrate how easy it is to generate multi-body models from Romax Concept using Dynamic Fusion, CAD models using CAD Fusion, and how to export designs to other Romax products for more detailed simulation and analysis.

What you will learn:

  • Basics of powertrain planning and design using Romax Concept
  • How to optimise transmission ratios to satisfy vehicle requirements
  • How Romax Concept facilitates an integrated development process promoting quality, performance and innovation
