Efficiency optimisation of EV transmissions using thermal analysis and CFD
Date: , 09:00 & 16:00 GMT
Presented by: Jordan Craven, Drivetrain Design & Analysis Engineer; Matthew Wigmore, Aerospace Engineer; Romax Technology
Understanding thermal influences in a transmission from gears, bearings and electric machines is key to optimising oil-fill level and other design parameters. CFD can provide accurate churning loss values for complete efficiency maps and insights into lubricant flow rates into critical components.
In this webinar, each step of the thermal modelling of an EV transmission will be presented, including 1D thermal network and 3D Finite Element modelling to achieve a complete set of system temperatures and FE temperature distributions. The influence of thermal expansions is considered in a Romax model to provide more accurate efficiencies and gear-mesh properties. CFD is used to accurately simulate churning loss to overcome limitations of empirical relations or analytical methods. In addition, qualitative flow patterns can be used to ensure adequate lubrication in all critical components.
